Aleppo - SMART

The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) killed a commander and fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the Afrin area in Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The YPG is a predominantly Kurdish military faction in Syria that controls areas in al-Raqqa, al-Hasakah and Aleppo. The YPG fights the Islamic State and is supported by the International Coalition. It does not fight against the Syrian loyalist forces but fights against the FSA.

The FSA is a military gathering founded in July 2011 by dissident officers of the Syrian government forces to protest the violence against peaceful demonstrators. It aims to overthrow the Syrian government. Its fighters are deployed in most of the Syrian governorates.

A military source told SMART that the commander of the 23rd Division of the FSA, Ahmed Brier, died on Tuesday as a result of wounds caused by a landmine explosion planted by the YPG near the village of Mariamin. A number of FSA fighters were also wounded.

The source added that after the explosion, clashes broke out between the Third Corps of the FSA and the YPG in the village of Teranda, killing and wounding about 13 FSA fighters. The wounded were transferred to the hospital in the city of Afrin for treatment.

The source stated that Turkish artillery forces in the area targeted YPG bases near the village of Teranda, causing injuries in their ranks.

The clashes are part of a series of security operations by the YPG of the Syrian Democratic Forces against the Olive Branch factions and the Turkish Army, which gained control of the city of Afrin and all its districts in March 2018.
