Idlib - SMART

Hundreds of families fled the Jisr al-Shughur area, 30 kilometers west of Idlib, Northern Syria, due to the Russian and Syrian government forces' military escalation in the area.

Ayman Qahwaji, the president of the Jisr al-Shughur local council, reported that hundreds of families fled the city and headed for the Northern Idlib countryside.

Haytham Hammoud, the president of the Ibdita village council, said that 14 families from the villages of the Jisr al-Shughur area arrived at relatives' houses in the villages of Ibdita and Deir Sonbol. The president of the Deir Sonbol village council, Abu Ibrahim, said that several displaced families arrived to the village.

Abu Omar, the president of the Beidar Shamso village council, noted that 90 percent of the families were temporarily displaced to the farmlands close to the Jisr al-Shughur area.

On Tuesday, the Syrian government forces and Russia started an intensified airstrike campaign on cities and towns in the Idlib governorate, killing and injuring more than 13 civilians.

The Idlib governorate is included in the de-escalation agreement, which the guarantor states Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed to extend in the governorate during the last round of the Astana talks.
