Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday night, the United States President Donald Trump warned of a slaughter by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the governorate of Idlib, Northern Syria.

Trump said in a speech during his meeting in the White House with the Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah, that the world is watching the situation in Idlib closely, adding, "If it's a slaughter, the world is going to get very, very angry and the United States is going to get angry, too.

Trump called for avoiding danger in Idlib, saying that there are at least three million innocent people there.

Trump denied discussing an assassination of al-Assad with the Defense Secretary Jim Matisse, as quoted in the book by the US journalist Bob Woodward. Trump added, "This has not even been contemplated."

Trump's statements came hours after the Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Gawish Oglu said that bombing the Idlib governorate "is wrong and must stop."

Idlib is included in the de-escalation agreement, whose sponsors Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed to renew in the governorate during the last round of the Astana Talks.
