Turkey, SMART

On Thursday, Ali Larijani, the head of the Iranian Parliament stated that he wishes the guarantor states of the Astana Talks  (Russia, Turkey, and Iran) reach an agreement on the Idlib governorate, during a summit in Tehran.

Larijani added that Russian President Vladimir Putin would discuss with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hassan Rouhani, the updates in Idlib during the summit to be held in Tehran on Friday, according to Reuters.

On Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavic Oglu stated that Ankara would pressure during the summit to reach an agreement to stop attacks on Idlib and to plan a strategy to annihilate extremist groups.”

Days ago, the Russian deputy Foreign Minister stated that no one wants to get involved in active military actions in Idlib. The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the need to demolish militants in Idlib.

The statements coincide with Russian and Syrian government forces’ threats to storm Idlib amidst intensified airstrikes that killed 14 civilians and injured 31 others. The Syrian government forces sent military reinforcements to Idlib and spoke of a Russian-backed military operation in the governorate.

The Idlib governorate in Northern Syria is included in the de-escalation agreement, which the guarantor states Russia, Iran, and Turkey renewed in the last round of the Astana Talks.
