Al-Raqqa, SMART

On Thursday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested dozens of youths in a city and two villages, Western al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, for compulsory recruitment.

The SDF is comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

A local source reported that the Military Police belonging to the SDF arrested 20 youths at the al- Sad, al-Dawar, Second Neighborhood, al-Salhabia, and al-Mansoura checkpoints. The source added that the Military Police sent the youths to compulsory recruitment camps.

The source added that the residents of al-Raqqa fear from the implementation of compulsory recruitment law in the city after the deployment of the Autonomous Defense Troops to the checkpoints of al-Muhafazah, al-Mushalab, and al-Furusia.

On August 12, 2018, the SDF arrested 17 youths at the Second Neighborhood checkpoint in the city of al-Tabaqa. The SDF launched a campaign to inspect residents’ identity cards, and arrested youths aged between 18 and 28 years old.

The SDF launch many campaigns to arrest youths in areas controlled by the Kurdish Autonomous Administration either for compulsory recruitment or on charges of being members of the Islamic State (IS). The residents of al-Raqqa organized protests against the SDF arrest campaigns.
