Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) imposed a curfew in the city of al-Tabqah and increased security procedures in the city of al-Raqqa, east of al-Tabqah, Northeastern Syria.

The SDF is comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and operates mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir Ez Zor.

Local sources reported that the SDF and the Asayish Forces imposed a curfew in all neighborhoods and public facilities of the western al-Raqqa governorate. The SDF also increased security procedures on checkpoints with a presence of American soldiers in the city.

The sources added that the curfew entered into force from 6:00 to 10:00 am, but the SDF suspended it for one hour and reactivated the curfew for further notice. No information about the reason for the curfew was reported, amidst a state of panic among the people.

The SDF and Asayish Forces imposed the curfew in al-Tabqah at the same time as they closed the entrances to the city of al-Raqqa and increased security procedures. Knowledgeable sources assumed that the SDF would impose a curfew in al-Raqqa after few hours.

A source from the SDF who preferred to stay anonymous said that the purpose of the security campaign is to arrest Islamic State (IS) members and networks who planned the recent explosions in al-Raqqa.

A civilian residing in al-Raqqa said, "No one is walking in the streets; there are not even vehicles moving. The shops have been closed since the morning, and we cannot find bread to buy."

Local activists accused the SDF and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) of executing this increased security campaign in al-Raqqa to confiscate weapons and detain young men for recruitment. The activists added that the SDF and the YPG detained dozens of young men in several towns in Western al-Raqqa.

The SDF has detained hundreds of young men in al-Raqqa during recruitment campaigns. The SDF also arrested civilians, accusing them of dealing with the IS, which claimed responsibility for several explosions that targeted SDF members.

Recently, several explosions targeted SDF members in al-Raqqa. Members of the SDF and the YPG committed violations against civilians in al-Raqqa, such as shooting demonstrators for protesting against the SDF's decisions, according to activists. Two weeks earlier, the SDF disrupted and disbanded a protest near al-Rashid park.
