Al-Raqqa - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) detained around 270 people from several villages west of the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, for different accusations.

The SDF is comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

On Monday, a particular source reported that the SDF launched a security campaign on the villages of al-Ansar, Ajaj, al-Royan, al-Rashid, al-Andalus, al-Hayef, Khat al-Naniah, al-Salhabiah, and al-Souiadiah al Saghira. During the security campaign, the SDF detained 270 people, accusing them of weapon trading, allegiance to the Islamic State (IS), dealing with the loyalist forces, and drug dealing.

The source added that the campaign started after the SDF imposed a curfew in the city of al-Tabqah and its countryside. The curfew began three days earlier and was suspended on Sept.9. 2018.

On Saturday, local sources reported that the SDF detained around 22 people from the villages of al-Hamam, al-Baruda, and al-Masnoura during an arresting campaign in the Western al-Raqqa countryside. The SDF also imposed a curfew in the area.

The SDF's security campaign coincided with several incidents that targeted the SDF members in al-Raqqa. Activists accused the YPG and the SDF of committing breaches against protesters, as the SDF and the YPG shot fires on protesters to scatter a protest near the al-Rashid park two weeks earlier.
