Al-Raqqa, SMART

On Monday, the Initial Response Team (IRT) removed 13 bodies from beneath the rubble in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.

A medical examiner in the IRT said that they removed 12 bodies from beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings in the neighborhoods of al-Qitar and al-Banorama. The medical examiner added that they found a body of an Islamic State’s member under the rubble of a house in the al-Badou neighborhood.

The medical examiner, who preferred not to be anonymous, added that they had removed 2,250 bodies from beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings. The medical examiner noted that they handed some of the bodies to their families, and buried the unclaimed bodies in the martyrs’ cemetery (Tal al-Bay’a).

On August 29, 2018, Ibrahim al-Hassan the chief of the reconstruction committee in the al-Raqqa Civil Council stated that they had removed 2,147 bodies since January 8, 2018.

The IRT continues to remove bodies from beneath the rubble caused by the International Coalition’ bombings on al-Raqqa. The International Coalition admitted to killing 1,061 civilians “unintentionally.” The numbers of the victims that the International Coalition declared are less than the ones that documented by human rights organizations.
