Syrian Democratic Forces launch last stage of operation to expel Islamic State from Deir ez-Zor

On Tuesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched the last stage of the Euphrates Anger operation to expel the Islamic State (IS) from its last strongholds in the governorate of Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria, with the support of the International Coalition and in coordination with the Iraqi Army.

The SDF are comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

In a statement, the SDF said that the Deir ez-Zor military council, Border Guards, and Kurdish People's and Women's Protection Units will participate in the operation, with air and artillery support from the International Coalition and in coordination with the Iraqi Army.

The SDF added that the operation includes the area of Hajeen and surrounding villages on the border with Iraq, comprising of ​​350 square kilometers.

The SDF stated that it had opened a humanitarian corridor near the town of Bahra to evacuate civilians.

The IS is only present in Hajeen, Abu al-Khater, Abu al-Hasan, al-Shaafah, al-Sousse and al-Baghur al-Tahtani in Deir ez-Zor, all areas of which are surrounded by the SDF and the Syrian government forces and its loyalist militias.
