Deir al-Zour - SMART

On Tuesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Islamic State (IS) clashed in Eastern Deir al-Zour, Eastern Syria, as the International Coalition sent reinforcements to the region.

Local sources told SMART that the SDF attacked the area from the villages of Sousse and al-Baghuz, where they clashed with the IS on the al-Muzan crossroad.

The sources added that the IS burned fuel along the highway between the two villages to cause smoke to block the view for International Coalition warplanes. The International Coalition supports the SDF in the clashes against the IS.

The sources noted that there were deaths and injuries on both sides, without knowing the exact numbers. The IS captured some SDF fighters after they fell into an ambush, according to the sources.

The sources added that the US-led coalition forces sent reinforcements from its military base in the al-Omar oil field to the front line with the IS, noting that the reinforcements were comprised of French and US troops in armored vehicles.

Earlier today, the SDF announced the start of the last phase of Operation Euphrates to expel the Islamic State from its last stronghold in Deir al-Zor.

The Islamic State controls the villages of Hjin, Abu Al-Khater, Abu al-Hasan, al-Shaafah, al-Sousse, and al-Bajur al-Tahtani, which are surrounded by the SDF and the Syrian government forces and its supporting militias.
