Aleppo - SMART

On Tuesday, residents of the city of Afrin in Aleppo, Northern Syria, complained about the violations committed by an opposition military faction in the city amidst the inability of the  city's security services to hold the faction accountable.

A local source reported that an armed group that claims to affiliate with the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction, lead by a person called Abu Jamou, loots homes and blackmails residents. The source added that the armed group commits violations against the residents including random arrests and beatings. The source noted that the armed group resisted the military police on several occasions, and the military police failed to arrest the members of the group.

A media activist who introduced himself as Abu al-Yusr stated to the Aleppo Gate that the members of the armed group expelled a Kurdish man and his family from his uncle's house, claiming to settle forcibly displaced families in the house. Instead, the members turned the house into a military headquarters.

Abu al-Yusr added that the members of the armed group harassed a Kurdish girl in Afrin. Abu al-Yusr noted that the members act immorally with the residents, who can smell alcohol and drugs coming from the members’ headquarters.

Abu Jamou was a military commander in the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction of the Turkish-backed National Syrian Army. The Ahrar al-Sharqiya dismissed Abu Jamou due to many complaints against him. According to local activists the Ahrar al-Sharqiya issued no formal statement about Abu Jamou’s dismissal.

Earlier, Abu Jamou caused clashes between the Ahrar al-Sharqiya and the al-Waki family in the city of al-Bab in Aleppo. The clashes killed and injured fighters on both sides and crippled traffic and trade activities in al-Bab.

Activists accuse the Free Syrian Army (FSA) of killings, kidnappings, and lootings since the FSA gained control of the Afrin area in March 2018. The FSA, in cooperation with the Turkish Army, expelled the Kurdish People's Protection Units from Afrin.

The Aleppo Gate belongs to the Bawabat Syria (Syria's Gates) website, and is a media project within the SMART institution.
