Turkey - SMART

Russia's special envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, said that the assault against terrorist organizations in Idlib, Northern Syria, can be delayed, but it is up to Turkey to separate Islamist militants from the moderate opposition.

Lavrentiev told reporters after talks with the United Nations envoy Staffan de Mistura in Geneva, "We are saying the situation in Idlib should be settled most preferably in a peaceful way. It is possible to abstain from using military force,” according to Reuters and Russian media channels.

Lavrentiev added, "Idlib province is (...) a sort of zone of responsibility of Turkey; it is their responsibility to separate the moderate opposition from the extremists, from Jabhat al-Nusra and other groups, other terrorist groups."

Lavrentiev also said that they spoke about a delay of one, two, or three weeks, stressing the need to find a solution sooner or later.

Lavrentiev's statements followed consultations on Syria at the UN headquarters in Geneva. During the consultations, the United States Ambassador to the UN said that Russia and Iran are not serious about finding a diplomatic solution in Syria.

The Syrian government forces and Russia launched a military escalation in the Idlib and Hama governorates, targeting the region with airstrikes and heavy artillery and missile shelling, killing and injuring dozens of civilians, destroying a Civil Defense center, and displacing a large number of people.
