Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, issued a decision banning human smuggling from Syria to Turkey through the area of Harim in Idlib, Northern Syria, without further details.

A statement published by the HTS border security administration said that the HTS banned smuggling through the border area from Bab al-Hawa to the town of Azmarin, starting on Wednesday and "until further notice."

The Syrian-Turkish border area included in the ban is about 70 kilometers wide, and is considered one of the most active areas for smuggling humans into Turkey, as thousands of Syrians are forced to leave the country.

Human smugglers have until now bribed the HTS' border offices to allow Syrians to cross the border. The HTS border security forces executed one of the smugglers after he killed about 17 civilians that he was smuggling to Turkey, stealing their belongings and money.

The Turkish Border Guards (Gendarmerie) continue to target immigrants passing through border areas without documents, killing and injuring indiscriminately. Turkey intends to build a 911-kilometer-long separation wall along the Syrian-Turkish border.
