Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Saturday, dozens of people demonstrated in Eastern Deir al-Zour, Eastern Syria, to demand the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to return the cars detained by SDF to their owners.

The SDF is comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

A local source told SMART that the demonstration started in the village of Tiyana of Nahiyat Diyban and the demonstrators set fires on tires in the streets and demanded the SDF to return cars to their owners and to cancel the fine imposed on them.

A few days ago, the SDF seized about 15 cars from their owners on charges of "stealing and transporting oil in their cars," according to the source.

At the end of March, the Asayish forces of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration arrested truck drivers loaded with diesel fuel in the northwest of al-Raqqa, coming from Deir al-Zor. The Ashish said that they captured the drivers because they violated transportation decisions that prohibit them from entering and selling fuel except through the Asaiysh permission or in its stations. On April 3, the Asaiysh forces also captured 25 truckloads of oil in the village of Mazra'at Tishreen in al-Raqqa for the same reason.
