Daraa - SMART

The Syrian government forces found a mass grave in the town of al-Musayfirah, 22 kilometers east of Daraa, Southern Syria. The mass grave of 35 bodies included the body of a military commander and Druze people.

On Sunday, local sources reported that the Syrian government forces found the body of Ahmad Fahed al-Nu'mah, the commander of the Daraa military council, who went missing in 2013, and the body of a woman, Metha Ali Abu Erra, in addition to bodies of people belonging to the Druze ethnoreligious group. The Syrian government transported the bodies to Damascus without counting the exact number of bodies.

On May 3, 2018, the al-Nusra Front detained Ahmad al-Nu'mah, accusing him of blocking the Islamist factions' advance in Hauran, handing over the al-Hara city and Khirbat Ghazalah town to the Syrian government forces. Al-Nu'mah was also accused of dealing with Israel.

On Sept. 24, 2018, the al-Nusra Front executed Metha Ali Abu Erra on witchery accusations. Metha is a well-known coffee ground reader in Southern Syria.

The sources added that the grave also included the body of the Syrian government forces 28th Brigade commander and the bodies of other officers from the brigade. The grave included the bodies of young men from the al-Suwayda governorate and two bodies of men from Khirbat Ghazalah.

The sources confirmed that the Syrian government forces collected information about the mass grave from a former al-Nusra Front commander, Sinjer. After the forced displacement agreement, Sinjer headed to Northern Syria and later turned himself in to the Syrian government after he was offered a settlement, according to the sources.

After the Syrian government forces tortured him in the prison, Sinjer gave them information about the al-Nusra Front's activities while they controlled the town of al-Musayfirah.

The al-Nusra Front was a prominent organization in Syria that announced its secession from al-Qaeda in July 2016, changed its name to the Fatah al-Sham front, and formed a military alliance thereafter, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The United States does not consider the change of name to change the fact that the organization has been classified as a terrorist group by the International Security Council since 2013.

In July, 2018, the Free Syrian Army factions, Islamist factions, and Russia reached an agreement that included the Daraa government, except the Northwestern Daraa countryside. The agreement included a ceasefire, delivering the FSA's heavy weapons in Daraa, and relocating people who refused to reconcile with the Syrian government to Northern Syria.
