Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, Turkish authorities suspended a Syrian teacher from her duties and detained her on religious charges. The teacher taught at an elementary school in the Nahiyat Ma'batli in the Afrin area, which is controlled by the Turkish Army and factions of the Olive Branch Operation.

The manager of the school, who introduced himself as Ahmad, said that days ago, the governor of Afrin, who is tied to the Turkish government in the area, met Ahmad and representatives of protesters in the Ma'batli court, and told them about the decision to suspend the teacher from her duties and interrogate her on charges of humiliating Islam.

On Tuesday, civilians, most of whom are forcibly displaced people (FDP) from Northern Homs and Eastern Ghouta residing in Afrin, protested before the headquarters of the local council in Ma'batli. The protesters stormed the headquarters of the council and expelled members in condemnation of hiring a teacher from Ma'batli accused of cursing holy Quran during a session with forcibly displaced teachers.

Ahmad added that the teacher Mazkin Ishano asked to teach religion, and when the forcibly displaced teachers asked Ishano how she would teach religion while wearing "indecent clothing" (she was not veiled), Ishano answered that the veil is not obligatory. Ahmad noted that when the teachers asked Ishano how she would teach the students how to pray, she answered that she would let the students decide whether to pray or not.

Ahmad added that when a teacher specialized in Shari'a told Ishano that there is a verse in Quran that confirms praying is a must, Ishano said that the Quran is distorted, according to Ahmad.

SMART has not yet been able to verify the accusations, and attempts to contact her and her family have failed so far.

A well-informed source reported that it is likely that Ishano will not be able to deliver press statements because "Kurdish people fear the local council and the Turks," and the FDP are "waiting for any fault to attack the council due to its actions against them."

SMART has not yet received a reply from the deputy head of the local council in Ma'batli about the case.

A member in the FDP Affairs Administration in Ma'batli, who introduced himself as Abu Ammar, said that on September 30, 2018, he, under the intermediation of Turks, dignitaries, tribes, and local governor, held a reconciliation session between the local council and the FDP Affairs Committee after suspending Ishano's duties and appointing a substitute teacher.

Activists from Afrin and others close to the Kurdish Autonomous Administration accuse Turkey and the factions of the Olive Branch Operation of committing violations in the Afrin area after they gained control of it. The activists reject the Turkish intervention, while the Syrian Interim Government established local councils to manage the area.
