Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Tuesday, the Syrian government moved dozens of young men, who previously signed reconciliation papers with the government, from the city of al-Ruhaybah, Eastern Damascus, to be enlisted to compulsory service in its forces.

A local source told SMART that the Syrian government took 110 young men from al-Ruhaybah, most of whom had previously fought in the ranks of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamist battalions in the city, before reaching a reconciliation agreement with the Syrian government.

The source explained that the reconciliation papers with the young men had expired. Any young man that holds such a paper will be arrested or recruited by the Syrian government forces

The source stated that a month and a half ago, the Syrian government also took 65 young men from the city for the same reason. The Syrian government drove them all to its gathering center in the nearby town of al-Nabk.

Earlier, the Syrian government forces and its supporting militias, most notably the al-Quds Brigade, recruited dozens of young men from the city of al-Ruhaybah to involve them in the battles of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, in exchange for 250 US dollars.

In April, 2018, the Syrian government displaced people in city of al-Ruhaybah that refused to reconcile as part of an agreement between the FSA and a Russian delegation. The agreement included the deployment of Russian police at the entrances to the cities of al-Ruhaybah and Jayrud to ensure that the Syrian government forces do not enter them. The agreement also included preserving the property and the right of the displaced civilians.
