Idlib - SMART

The Syria Charity Organization withdrew from the countrysides of Idlib and Hama, Northern and Central Syria, after one of its staff was kidnapped in the region.

On Wednesday, the organization reported that it suspended all its medical, relief and humanitarian work and distribution of orphans' guarantees in the southern countryside of Idlib and the northern countryside of Hama for a week.

The organization added that if its employee, who was detained 14 days ago, isn't released, they will stop their activities in the region. The organization called on all humanitarian and charitable organizations, civil society, and concerned parties to put pressure on the kidnappers to release the employee immediately without conditions.

The organization's media official, Abu Alaa, told SMART that they contacted all concerned parties in the region in an attempt to release the employee. The kidnappers are concentrated in the southern countryside of Idlib.

Abu Alaa added that the kidnappers contacted the family of the kidnapped employee and demanded a ransom, but his family were unable to pay. The kidnappers beat and tortured their son to put pressure on them.

The Syria Charity Organization provides about 2,000 orphans with more than a dozen ambulances and two clinics, one of which is mobile. If the organization stops its work, thousands of civilians will be affected in the region, according to Abu Alaa.

On Sept. 28, the organization said that ten days ago, five unknown gunmen kidnapped the worker Alaa Alawi from his car in the village of Khan Sheikhun. Activists said on Facebook that the incident occurred in the village of Sahyan.

Kidnappings for ransom have recently spread in the governorate of Idlib, where assassinations of leaders and fighters of the Free Syrian Army and Islamist battalions also spread.
