Idlib -SMART

On Thursday night and Friday morning, an Islamic State (IS) group attacked a headquarters of the al-Ahrar Army in the village of al-Talhiya in Nahiyat Taftanaz, 16 kilometers east of Idlib, Northern Syria.

Ammar Dashirni, a commander of the al-Ahrar Army, reported that their fighters stationed in the headquarters repelled the IS attack, killing most of the attackers; however, the rest of the attackers escaped.

Dashirni added that the IS members did not capture al-Ahrar Army fighters; however, Dashirni had a reservation on stating the casualties of both sides.

In late November 2016, the al-Ahrar Army defected from the al-Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement. The al-Ahrar Army joined the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Abu Jaber al-Sheikh, the former commander of the al-Ahrar Army, led the HTS; however, the al-Ahrar Army defected from the HTS on September 14, 2017.

Activists noted that the IS group were limited to the city of Salqin and town of Sarmin; however, the IS groups attempt to spread all over the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

On September 26, 2018,  a suspected IS group kidnapped al-Ahrar Army fighters between the city of Ariha and town of al-Mastouma, Southern Idlib.

On June 18, 2018, the al-Ahrar Army launched a security operation against the IS groups in the town of Jobs in Idlib, Northern Syria, after the IS groups assassinated the deputy commander of the al-Ahrar Army and his son.
