Al-Suwayda - SMART

The Druze leader, Hikmat al-Hajari, assigned for the negotiations files for the release of the women and children kidnapped by the Islamic State (IS) from the governorate of al-Suwayda, Southern Syria.

On Friday, activists told SMART that the decision to hand over the file of the kidnapped women to al-Hajari came after the Druze leaders withdrew from the negotiations and to the increasing protests and tension in the city.

For the third day in a row, dozens of residents of the governorate of al-Suwayda have gathered in front of the governorate council building in the center of the city. They demanded to release of children and women kidnapped by the IS more than two months ago.

On Tuesday, tension rose in the city of al-Suwayda, and people fired guns into the air after the IS executed one of the kidnapped women.

On July 25, 2018, the IS attacked the city of al-Suwayda and villages in its eastern countryside, killing and wounding hundreds of people and kidnapping some women in the absence of the Syrian government forces from the region.
