Homs – SMART

A child died in the al-Rukban camp in the Syrian-Jordanian border area, 220 kilometers south of Homs, due to the lack of medical care and preventing her from going to a medical center on the perimeter of the camp.

Activists reported that the four-year-old child, Huda Ruslan, died in al-Rukban after her health situation has declined due to a lack of baby formula and a lack of medical teams in the camp.

The activists added that the medical teams of the only medical center in the area, on the perimeter of the camp on the border barriers between Jordan and Syria, refused to allow the child to enter the center for treatment, despite the demand of her parents from about a week.

The local management of the al-Rukban camp appealed to provide basic supplies, as the Syrian government has prevented food supplies from entering the camp, such as baby formula and flour, for a week.

On Sept. 23, the United Nations Children's Fund reopened the only official medical clinic in the camp after the Jordanian authorities closed it for more than a week. A child died during the period of closure after he was refused entry into Jordan to be treated in a Jordanian hospital.

The camp suffers from a lack of livelihood opportunities and a deteriorating health and education situation. The U.N. Goodwill Ambassador to the Middle East considered the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner in Amman "has not faithfully performed its duty" towards the camp.
