Al-Suwayda - SMART

On Monday, the protesters participating in the open sit-in for the women kidnapped by the Islamic State (IS) in al-Suwayda issued a statement condemning a shooting incident where Rijal al-Karamah forces fired shots at the Syrian government governorate council building, which is the location of the sit-in.

In the statement, the protesters said that civilians, civil society organizations, and relatives of the kidnapped women condemn shooting and emotional reactions that could affect the sit-in's goals and the case of kidnapped women, in addition to exposing the protesters' lives to danger.

The Rijal al-Karamah faction posted on social media accounts that two undisciplined members of the faction fired their guns after a dispute about whether or not the sit-in should continue. The faction held the Syrian government responsible for the incident for not properly handling the kidnapped women's case.

The protesters also stated that they are ready to compensate for the material damage in the governorate council building, confirming that they will continue their peaceful sit-in and use nonviolent means to release the kidnapped women. The protesters also called on all "sympathetic" participants to respect the sit-in and control their reactions.

The shooting incident followed a statement by the Rijal al-Karamah faction where they said, "We will not forget that the regime was the reason for what happened in the governorate, as they moved the terrorists (IS) and their weapons (closer to al-Suwayda) weeks before the attack. We hold the regime fully responsible for releasing the kidnapped women."

On Tuesday, tension rose in al-Suwayda after the IS executed one of the kidnapped women. The IS executed the woman after Druze leaders withdrew from the negotiations for the kidnapped people.
