Al-Suwayda - SMART

The relatives of the kidnapped women by the Islamic State (IS) in al-Suwayda, southern Syria suspended their sit-in for 48 hours after a shooting occurred in the place.

On Tuesday, the relatives of the kidnapped women stated, "We suspended our sit-in to prevent those who want to exploit stressed situations to lessen the sacristy of our cause."

The protesters confirmed that they would resume their sit-in after 48 hours, demanding the Syrian government to ensure the sit-in place and protect it legally, as well as the sit-in coverage by local media outlets.

The Sheikh al-Karama forces posted on social media accounts that two undisciplined members of the faction fired their guns after a dispute about whether or not the sit-in should continue. The faction held the Syrian government responsible for the incident for not properly handling the kidnapped women's case.

The Sheikh al-Karama forces defected from the Rijal al-Karama movement due to internal disagreements. In late March 2018, the Sheikh al-Karama forces appeared in al-Suwayda after they assassinated a drug dealer, who said that he admitted to killing the Rijal al-Karama commander Wahid al-Bal'ous along with dozens of fighters and civilians in September 2015. The faction includes two of al-Bal'ous' sons.

On Tuesday, tension rose in al-Suwayda amid shootings after the IS executed one of the kidnapped women. The IS executed the woman after Druze leaders withdrew from the negotiations for the kidnapped people.

On July 25, 2018, the IS attacked the city of al-Suwayda and villages in its eastern countryside, killing and wounding hundreds of people and kidnapping women in the absence of the Syrian government forces from the region.
