Homs - SMART

On Tuesday, the administration of the al-Rukban camp warned that food will run out in a week and the forcibly displaced people (FDP) in the camp, which is located on the Syrian-Jordanian border, will have to eat donkeys.

Mahmoud al-Hameli, the head of the media office in the civil administration of the camp, stated that shops and tents in the camp have started to run out of food. Al-Hameli estimated  that food will run out in a week or ten days in maximum.

Al-Hameli added, “In ten days, we do not know what could happen, the FDP will be eating donkeys as we have some in the camp.”

The administration of the camp appealed to humanitarian organizations to provide food and other basic materials a week after the Syrian government forces prevented food, flour, and infant formula from entering the camp.

Al-Hameli added that the FDP suffered from a lack of food even before the Syrian government forces recently prevented food from entering the camp. Al-Hameli noted that signs of malnutrition are likely to appear clearly in ten days.

Al-Hameli added that the prices of food increased; the price of bread increased to 300 Syrian pounds (SYP)  per bag, which is enough for two persons, bulgur wheat increased to 500 SYP per kilo, and cooking oil increased to 50,000 SYP for four litres.

Al-Hameli added that starvation spread in the camp before the siege imposed by the Syrian government forces because the FDP were unable to buy even a quarter of their needs in shops when food was available.

The Sham medical center counted 14 deaths in two weeks in the camp due to the lack of medical care.

On September 23, 2018, the United Nations Children’s Fund reopened the only medical clinic in the camp after Jordan closed the clinic for over a week, causing a child to die after he was denied entry into Jordan to be treated in a Jordanian hospital.
