Aleppo - SMART

The local council of the town of Urem al-Kubra, 15 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, negated news circulated by activists that four children were kidnapped from the town.

The negation followed news of kidnapping four children from the town by a car driver who transported the children to the city of Harem in Idlib; however, the children escaped to a nearby police station after the car broke down.

Muhammad Abu Nouri, the head of the local council of the town said that the four children were on a visit near the city of Harem and asked a car driver to lift them because they had not enough money. Abu Nour emphasized no kidnapping.

Abu Nouri added that the driver dropped the children at a nearby police station, but the children claimed that they were kidnapped. The police station circulated the news, according to the children’s claims. Abu Nouri added that the news of kidnapping was not right, noting that the children’s parents received them at the police station.

Kidnappings are remarkably common in the Aleppo countryside. Earlier, activists accused the al-Hamza Division of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) of kidnapping a woman and her daughter; however, the al-Hamza Division denied. Unknown kidnappers released a youth after they received 10,000 American dollars. On Tuesday, FSA factions arrested two gangs that kidnap civilians for a ransom.
