Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Wednesday, the Initial Response Team (IRT) of the al-Raqqa civil council pulled nine new bodies out from a mass grave in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria. One of the bodies belongs to an Islamic State (IS) member and the rest to civilians.

The IRT pulled the bodies of people killed in an airstrike out from the Panorama cemetery. The IRT handed over three of the bodies to their relatives, and recorded the rest in the registry of unidentified bodies and buried them in the cemetery of Tal Alal-Bayaah.

On Tuesday, the IRT pulled 12 new bodies out from the mass grave at the Panorama area in Southern al-Raqqa.

The IRT retrieves bodies from mass graves on a daily basis in al-Raqqa. In late August, 2018, the head of the Reconstruction Committee of the Civil Society, Ibrahim al-Hassan, told SMART that they have retrieved 2,147 bodies since Jan. 8, 2018.

Activists hold the International Coalition and the Syrian Democratic Forces responsibility for killing hundreds of civilians in al-Raqqa during the intense and indiscriminate shelling on the city during the IS' battle to control it. The IS killed others with landmines and booby traps during the battles.
