Aleppo - SMART

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) prevented an armed group led by someone called Basil al-Kurdi from returning to its headquarters in the city of Afrin, 42 kilometers north of Aleppo, Northern Syria, after being expelled from the area for offenses against civilians.

On social media, activists reported that the al-Kurdi group clashed with the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction fighters in the Villas Street in Afrin. The activists said that the clashes wounded four people, without specifying whether they were civilians or fighters.

Farouk Ahmed, deputy battalion commander in Ahrar al-Sharqiya, told SMART that on Tuesday night, the Basil al-Kurd group tried to return in a military convoy to its headquarters in Afrin after being expelled two days ago, but the Ahrar al-Sharqiya prevented them without any clashes.

Ahmed stated that the al-Kurdi group is "bad" and committed a lot of violations in the region, including theft, drug trafficking and abuse of civilians. He added that every time, they claim to belong to one of the factions in the region.

Ahmed said that they told the group several times the need to get out of the region if they continue abuses. Finally, the group was informed of the need to evacuate their headquarters and exit from the city because it belongs to the Ahrar al-Sharqiya.

The Ahrar al-Sharqiya representative in the military police in Afrin, nicknamed Abu Hasna, told SMART that in the recent two months, they received several complaints against the group. The claims related to brothels and drug trade. Abu Hasna stressed that there were no clashes between the parties.

At the beginning of this month, the Jaysh Osoud al-Sharqiya of the FSA carried out a military campaign against an armed group in the Afrin area. This group was carrying out violations and attacks against civilians in the area in the name of the FSA factions. The Ahrar al-Sharqiya Gathering also arrested a group that was impersonating the gathering and robbing the people in the city of Jarablus.

The Amnesty International Organization, activists and supporters of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration accused leaders and fighters of the Turkish army and FSA fighters of committing abuses against civilians in their controlled areas north and east of Aleppo.
