Aleppo - SMART

The Syrian government violated the Russian-Turkish agreement to establish a demilitarized zone in Northern Syria by bombing locations in Aleppo using heavy artillery shells.

On Thursday, the Jaysh Aleppo commander of the Free Syrian Army, Captain Amin, told SMART that the Syrian government forces targeted the areas of scientific research and al-Mansoura near the city of Aleppo using eight shells, in violation of the demilitarization agreement.

Captain Amin added that the opposition factions in the area responded to the source of the shells using medium weapons. The mutual shelling did not cause casualties on either side.

Earlier, the Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Syrian government supports the demilitarized zone, adding that Russia and Turkey will monitor the region. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the two countries will work to prevent provocative actions by "third parties."

Earlier on Wednesday, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced that they finished withdrawing heavy weapons from the demilitarized zone in Northern Syria, in accordance with the Russian-Turkish agreement. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the implementation of the demilitarized zone may be delayed a day or two after the scheduled date on Oct. 15.
