Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested civilians in the city of al-Tabaqa, Western al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, as part of their compulsory recruitment campaigns.

The SDF are comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

A security source told SMART that the SDF military police established four checkpoints in the city of al-Tabaqa and at its northern entrance, in search for those wanted for the compulsory recruitment. In the recent hours, the SDF arrested 12 people at the checkpoint of Dawood roundabout only.

The source stated that the arrests at the military police checkpoints continue without information about the destination of the arrested people.

The YPG and the SDF frequently arrest young people in the Kurdish Autonomous Administration-controlled areas, either to enlist them to compulsory recruitment or on a charge of being affiliated to the Islamic State.
