Germany - SMART

The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces demanded the international community to take quick action and put direct pressure on the Syrian government to break the siege on the Rukban Camp near the Syrian-Jordanian border (220 kilometers southwest of Homs) and allow humanitarian aid to enter without conditions.

In a statement published on Friday, the Syrian National Coalition said that the situation in the camp is deteriorating significantly, as about 70,000 forcibly displaced Syrians suffer from the tragic conditions of the siege that the Syrian government forces and their allied militias have imposed on the camp since last June.

The statement stressed the increasing deaths among children after international and relief organizations closed their aid programs, and the Syrian government checkpoints blocked medicine and food supplies, causing an increasing shortage of food, including flour and infant formula.

The statement said that the children in the camp need saving from the hunger project the Syrian government is submitting them and their parents too, especially that several children need specialized healthcare and urgent surgeries.

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) called for providing health care and essential services to the children and their families in the camp.

On Tuesday, the administration of the camp warned that food supplies would run out in a week, forcing the camp's residents to eat donkeys meat. Earlier, the camp's administration issued an appeal for the delivery of necessary supplies for the residents of the camp, after the Syrian government has blocked access to the area for a week.

About 1,500 families live in the Rukban camp and suffer a lack of necessities and deteriorating health and education conditions, despite the appeal issued by the UN Goodwill Ambassador to the Middle East to the international community to respond to the deteriorating humanitarian situation immediately.
