Turkey - SMART

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said that the Syrian government and Israel have agreed to open the Golan crossing on Monday.

In a statement quoted by Reuters on Saturday, Haley added that the opening would allow U.N. peacekeepers " will allow U.N. peacekeepers to step up their efforts to prevent hostilities in the Golan Heights region."

Haley said, " we look to both Israel and Syria to provide U.N. peacekeepers the access they need as well as assurances of their safety. We also call on Syria to take the necessary steps so UNDOF can safely and effectively deploy and patrol without interference."

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has been monitoring operations in the demilitarized zone after the 1973 war between Syria and Israel. The peacekeeping mission was disrupted by clashes in Quneitra governorate during the Syrian revolution.

The Syrian government seized the entire governorate of al-Quneitra as part of an agreement it reached with the opposition military factions last July. These factions were controlling some villages on the border with the Golan, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
