Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) attacked a Syrian government forces outpost in the demilitarized zone near the town of Abu al-Duhur in Eastern Idlib, Northern Syria, killing Syrian government forces members.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

HTS media outlets reported that HTS fighters attacked a Syrian government forces outpost in the village of Abu Qamis west of Abu al-Duhur, killing three members of the Syrian government forces at early count.

Activists close to the HTS noted that the Abu Bakr al-Sadiq Army belonging to the HTS attacked, losing one of their fighters. The activists added that the Abu Bakr Army fighters killed all members of the Syrian government forces at the outposts.

This HTS attack is considered the first in the demilitarized area following the agreement that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish Counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reached in mid-September 2018.

On Oct. 15, 2018, the HTS expressed their position against the agreement, saying that they will not hand over or give up their weapons and continue to fight the Syrian government.
