Aleppo - SMART

On Thursday, local bodies and several workers in the medical field organized a protest to condemn abducting medical workers and demand to neutralize them from the fighting in the city of Darat Izzah, 30 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria.

Administrative personnel and nurses from the Amal Specialized Center, along with members from governorate council and relatives of abducted medical workers, participated in the protest and raised banners that read, "Freedom to Ali al-Rashid, Ibrahim al-Radwan, and all the abductees."

The manager of the Amal Specialized Center, Abu Mosaab, said that the center's administration suspended work in the center for three days and organized this protest to condemn the abduction of nurses and medics who worked in the al-Amal Hospital in Northern Aleppo.

Abu Mosaad added that the abduction of medical workers "insults them, makes them want to stop humanitarian work," and affect stability and security in the area.

A member of the Aleppo governorate council, Marwan al-Helou, demanded neutralizing medical establishments and workers in the areas out of the loyalist forces' control from the fighting and releasing the abductees. Al-Helou said, "The abductors aim to unsettle the area and give a bad picture about it so the Syrian government forces can say that we are bands not ruled by law."

The mother of the abducted medical worker Ali al-Rashid demanded the release of her son, saying that her son's work is "mere humanitarian."

Last Wednesday, the Free Aleppo Health Directorate and the Syrian American Medical Society SAMS announced suspending work in the Huraytan Medical Center and the al-Amal Hospital in Aleppo due to the constant assaults against medical workers.

The protest came after an armed group stormed the al-Amal Hospital in Aleppo, seizing the emergency room for several hours, and abducted a nurse last Wednesday. Last Friday, another armed group assaulted the building of the Free Hama Health Directorate.
