Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Sunday, a car bomb explosion killed and injured Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters and civilians in the al-Noor street in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

An SDF media official who introduced himself as Muthana reported that the explosion targeted an SDF checkpoint, killing five SDF fighters and two civilians. Muthana added that the explosion injured civilians who were transported to the al-Tib al-Hadith hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion killed six SDF fighters and three civilians, including a child.

A SMART reporter said that the SDF closed the roads leading to the location of the explosion near the Ibn Khaldun school. The reporter noted that the explosion set fire to three vehicles, including a military vehicle.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the explosion, saying that it killed and injured 50 SDF fighters who had gathered to receive their salaries.

On August 18, 2018, a bomb exploded against a United States delegation convoy in the Basel al-Assad street in al-Raqqa.
