Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, the Russian Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev and the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed the formation of a Constitutional Committee in Syria.

Syrian government media outlets reported that the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin attended the meeting between Assad and Lavrentiev in Damascus. The outlets added that the two leaders agreed to continue to work on overcoming the obstacles that prevent the formation of the Constitutional Committee.

The Syrian government media outlets posted a photo on social media showing that Ali Mamlouk, the head of the Syrian National Security Office, was present at the meeting.

The Russian officials are visiting Damascus after the French, Russian, German, and Turkish presidents demanded the formation of the Constitutional Committee before the end of 2018 to achieve a constitutional reform and prepare the ground for transparent elections under the supervision of the United Nations. The presidents held a summit in Istanbul on Oct. 27, 2018.
