SMART - Aleppo

Several local councils in Western Aleppo, Northern Syria, held workshops for recycling and reusing waste, with the supervision of the Local Development Organization (LDO).

LDO's coordinator Muhammad Aref Sharifah told SMART that the workshops targeted the local councils working on sustainable development and included training classes on the concept of waste and the collection of rates, aiming to train the local councils to process waste and landfills.

Muhammad Abdul Khaliq, a trainer, said the course consists of four workshops, each composed of three sessions, adding that the area, in general, lacks recycling stations for certain types of waste, especially organic waste, which forms the most significant part of the household waste.

Mustafa Abdul Qadir, a workshop attendant, said that the attendants learned about recycling waste to benefit from them financially, which can be a substitute for supporting organizations, pointing out the need to transfer the workshop information to the people.

Local councils in Western Aleppo supervise development projects supported by local and international organizations, while the local administration in the Euphrates Shield Operation factions-controlled areas in Northern and Eastern Aleppo manages several service projects supported by the Turkish government.
