Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, the al-Ra'i border passage at the Syrian-Turkish border in Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria, resumed its work partially after Turkey closed it due to an attack by the Free Syrian Army's (FSA) Sultan Murad Armored Division, which is the majority of Turkmen fighters in Syria, supported by the Turkish government and deployed in Northern Syria. It is one of the largest components of the Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield operations room against the Islamic State (IS).

A media source from the al-Ra'i town local council told SMART that teams from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) and Turkish Red Crescent vehicles arrived at the passage on Monday and passed without problems.

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that the dispute between the area's Free Police and fighters from the Sultan Murad Division maybe resolved permanently today.

The source pointed out the importance of the passage, which connects the cities of Jarabulus, Azaz, and al-Bab to Turkey, making it an important trade route in all the Euphrates Shield Operation areas.

The source added that the al-Ra'i Trade Chamber recently obtained passes for 148 merchants to move through the passage into and out of Turkey, transporting several goods, most important of them are seasonal food supplies, livestock, feed, and daily supplies, in addition to charcoal used in heating.

A source from the police force running the passage told SMART that about 100 Sultan Murad fighters attacked the passage, forcing the police force to retreat and "the Turkish government to decide to close the passage until the police force is back in control of the passage." A media official from the Sultan Murad Division denied that the division is related to the closing decision.

In December 2017, Turkey opened the al-Ra'i passage after expelling the IS from vast areas in Northern and Eastern Aleppo during the Euphrates Shield Operation in collaboration with the FSA.
