Quneitra – SMART

Olive farmers' lack of access to their trees and insecticides have damaged the olive crops in the Quneitra governorate, Southern Syria.

On Tuesday, olive farmers in Quneitra reported that their trees suffer from worm infections and drought. The olive farmers have not been able to tend to the trees due to military operations in the area. The farmers were unable to use insecticides on the trees because the organizations that supported them earlier suspended their support when the Syrian government forces seized the area.

A farmer, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that this year's olive harvest was halved due to a drought. The farmer has 30 dunams (1 dunam = 1,000 square meters) of olive trees, which produced about 300 liters of olive oil last year.

Another farmer said that he has 30 olive trees that produced 80 kilograms of olives last year, but he assumed that this year's harvest will be smaller.

The farmers added that each dunam of olive trees costs 150 thousand Syrian pounds to water, plow, spray with insecticides, and pay for workers and pressing.

Unlike Quneitra, the olive production in the Shahshabo mountainous area in Northern Hama, Central Syria, increased by 50 percent compared to last year. The increase was due to early rainfall and the farmers' ability to access and care for the trees.

The Syrian government forces seized the Quneitra governorate after concluding an agreement with the opposition factions in July 2018. The factions used to control several villages near the border with the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
