Aleppo - SMART

In an interview with SMART on Tuesday, the Syrian Interim Government Educational Minister Imad Barq demanded civil organizations to ensure the printing of sufficient textbooks in Northern Syria at a cost of about $3 million dollars.

Barq said that the Education Ministry relies on organizations' support to print textbooks due to the lack of funds, support and resources from the Syrian Interim Government. Braq stated that they submitted a project to print more textbooks to a number of organizations before the school year started, but they have not received a response so far.

Braq added that each year, a civil society organization supports the project in accordance with the curriculum approved by the Interim Government. The region needs about 5 million textbooks, and the cost of printing is about $3 million dollars per year.

Last year, the Education Ministry announced the printing of free textbooks for 700,000 students throughout Syria. A number of teachers in the village of Babka west of Aleppo use local printer to cover the shortage of textbooks.

Education in the areas outside Syrian government control faces several difficulties, including the lack of support and intense Syrian government forces and Russian bombings on schools and educational establishments.
