Aleppo - SMART

A device exploded in a civilian car near the Sabe'a Baharat roundabout in the city of Manbij, 80 kilometers east of Aleppo, Northern Syria, killing the driver, amid increased security measures in the city.

Activists reported that a device exploded in the engine of the civilian's car, killing him. The civilian was a driver of the Women's House of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in the city.

The spokesman for the Manbij military council of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Sharvan Darwish, reported that the explosion killed the owner of the car, without knowing who was behind the explosion. Darwish stated that they are still investigating.

Activists circulated a photo of a statement attributed to the Islamic State (IS). The IS claimed responsibility for the explosion, but this has not been confirmed.

Darwish stated that the Internal Security Forces in Manbij arrived at the scene after hearing the explosion, and discovered that it was caused by a device placed inside a civilian car. The forces surrounded the scene and began collecting evidence.

Darwish stressed that there are no military headquarters, checkpoints or public institutions in the area of the explosion.

Several devices have exploded in Manbij before, some of which targeted vehicles belonging to the SDF, while others killed and injured civilians, including children.
