Deir al-Zor – SMART

An Internet cutoff in the city of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, continues for the second consecutive day due to damage in the optical fiber cable.

On Tuesday, local sources reported that the damage in the optical fiber cable near the city of al-Sekhnah, Eastern Homs, Central Syria, caused an ADSL service cutoff in Deir al-Zor.

The sources added that people in Deir al-Zor depend on two Syrian mobile network providers, Syriatel and MTN, while people in the city of Alboukamal depend on Syrian and Iraqi network providers.

Civilians contacted post office employees who told them that they are repairing the damage but did not say when they will finish, according to the sources.

In August 2018, Internet and mobile network services were cut in several parts of Syria, coinciding with high school exams in Syrian government-controlled areas.

People in Deir al-Zor complain about damaged residential buildings and the lack of services from the Syrian government. In November 2017, the Syrian government forces gained control of Deir al-Zor after the Islamic State withdrew from it.
