Homs - SMART

On Sunday, the Jordanian Army stationed at a nearby border outpost opened fire at the al-Rukban camp near the Jordanian border, 340 kilometers southeast of Homs, Central Syria. The shooting killed an elderly woman.

On October 4, 2019, the Syrian government laid siege to the al-Rukban camp, preventing residents from gaining access to food and medical supplies. The camp administration demanded aid for the more than 50,000 people living in the difficult humanitarian and health situation. More than 12 people, including children, have died in the camp to date.

Ruqaya, the manager of the Sham medical clinic in the camp, said that the Jordanian Army opened fire at the camp starting at 6:00 a.m. for unknown reasons. Ruqaya added that the shooting injured a woman who later died from the four shots she received in her chest.

Sources from the camp reported that the killed woman's name was Fawza Qasem al-Shihab, and that she was 60 years old and came from the city of Palmyra in Eastern Homs. The sources added that the woman was sitting in front of her tent when she was shot.

A week ago, a young man from Palmyra died in al-Rukban following complications after a surgery, amidst the lack of medical care. Earlier, several children died from the lack of medicine and medical care.

Days ago, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry stated that Jordan, Russia, and the United States seek to move the forcibly displaced people from the al-Rukban camp. The ministry stressed that Jordan will not assume responsibility for the camp. An official source in the camp reported that it is impossible to evacuate the camp because its residents cannot return to their homes.

The camp is home to 50,000 people who suffer amidst the lack of basic necessicites and deteriorating medical and educational conditions. The residents of the camp protested the lack of aid from humanitarian organizations.
