Turkey - SMART

The Secretary-General of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, Nazir al-Hakim, denies all reports of meeting with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) Commander Abu Muhamad al-Julani in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

Abu Muhammad al-Julani is the leader of the Nusra Front and the military commander of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Al-Julani is one of the most prominent figures on international terrorism lists.

Al-Hakim's statement came after the Syria business tycoon, Firas Tlass, posted on Facebook, "Nazir al-Hakeem, who is a former Muslim Brotherhood leader, entered the Idlib countryside and met with al-Julani," adding that al-Hakim discussed Russian and Turkish propositions sent to the HTS.

Nazir al-Hakim said, "All these news are false."

SMART contacted the HTS, which said that it does not make sense to receive the propositions this way, adding that in cases like this, Turkey and Russia would contact the HTS directly.

The source confirmed that he had not heard about the alleged meeting.

Nazir al-Hakim has been the secretary general of the Syrian National Council since May 6, 2018. He was elected member of the Coalition’s political committee and served as the head of the Coalition’s foreign mission in Turkey.
