Aleppo - SMART

The Kobani University of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration opens a biology department in the city of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) near Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The Autonomous Administration was established in 2013 after the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) gained control of most of the province of al-Hasakah, Kobani (Ayn al-Arab), and Afrin. The Autonomous Administration seeks to obtain federal autonomy in Syria.

The head of the university, Kamal Basrawi, said that they opened the college earlier this month to develop science and knowledge in the region.

Basrawi added that this year, more students than usual applied to the university. Basrawi did not mention how many students were accepted, but stated that they raised the number of teachers to 24.

Basrawi noted that they are working on establishing housing for students who come from areas outside the city of Ayn al-Arab.

The university opened in early September 2017, and has several departments, including Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Kurdish.

Last month, the Kurdish Autonomous Administration held its first conference for the universities of Afrin, Kobani and Rojava in the city of al-Qamishli, Northern al-Hasakah, to organize their work, elect a joint presidency of the universities, establish an internal system and a Higher Education Ministry.
