Daraa - SMART

Activists from the governorate of Daraa, Southern Syria, document six people from Daraa that were kidnapped in the neighboring governorate of al-Suwayda in the course of 20 days.

On Wednesday, activists in the Daraa Martyrs' Documentation Office stated that between October 22 and November 9, 2018, gangs kidnapped six people and demanded their families to pay a ransom for their release.

The activists also stated that the kidnappers released only two people, one of them a child, after dignitaries and armed factions in al-Suwayda intervened. The activists said that the fate of the rest of kidnapped people remains unknown.

Earlier this month, the activists reported that kidnappers released a man from Daraa after kidnapping him in the Hama governorate in Central Syria.

In recent years, dozens of people have been kidnapped in the governorates of Daraa and al-Suwayda in exchange for ransoms. Activists accuse the Syrian government of being involved in many of the kidnappings.
