Daraa - SMART

Two brothers from the village of Umm Walad, 40 kilometers east of Daraa, Southern Syria, were tortured to death in the Sednaya military prison of the Syrian government.

The brothers' official medical reports revealed that Mohammed and Anas Mahmoud Qasim al-Rifai died from heart failure after they were forcibly disappeared several years ago, according to the Martyrs' Documentation Office in Daraa.

On Tuesday, the Martyrs' Documentation Office said that the Syrian government refused to hand over the brothers' bodies to their family. The office stated that Mohammed was arrested seven years ago, while Anas was arrested four years ago in Damascus.

The Martyrs' Documentation Office in Daraa is an independent human rights office. It documents the martyrs of the Syrian Revolution in the Daraa governorate and publishes statistics on them.

On June 26, 2018, the Syrian Network for Human Rights documented that more than 13,000 people have been tortured to death in Syria; most of them by Syrian government forces.

On Feb. 7, 2017, Amnesty International issued a report entitled "Human Slaughterhouse," in which it revealed that the Syrian government forces executed 13,000 people in the Sednaya prison, most of them civilians opposed to the Syrian government.
