Hama - SMART

Syrian government forces deploy patrols in the main streets of the city of Hama, Central Syria, to prevent sit-ins demanding the release of Hama Central Prison detainees.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Syrian government forces and its Shabiha militia deployed to the Assi Square in the center of the city and the roads leading to it, accompanied by heavily armed vehicles.

The eyewitnesses said that the Syrian government forces deployed after detainees in the Hama Central Prison called for a sit-in to demand their release.

The eyewitnesses, who are in communication with the prisoners, stated that the phone signal is very poor around the prison, and that they were only able to communicate with them for a short time on Wednesday morning.

The eyewitnesses added that nobody organized sit-ins in front of the prison on Wednesday for fear of arrest. They stated that a Russian delegation is supposed to visit the prison, but the visit was delayed until Thursday.

A few days ago, about 40 detainees received news of their relocation to the Saydnaya Central Prison in Rif Dimashq, where 11 of them will be executed. The Syrian government arrested the detainees for participating in a demonstration at the beginning of the Syrian Revolution in 2011.
