Idlib - SMART

The local council in the village of Umm Jalal near the town of al-Tamaniah, 50 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria, announces that the village has become a disaster zone and that all its residents have fled after the Syrian government forces shelled it with 175 shells.

On Thursday, the head of the village council, Dhaif Allah al-Murr, reported that all 9,500 villagers fled to neighboring villages due to the intense daily shelling.

Al-Murr added that the people fled to the villages of al-Deir al-Gharbi, al-Deir al-Sharqi, Maarshamsha, Maarshmarin, Babulin, and Taqana. Camps were established on the outskirts of the villages to house the people of Umm Jalal.

Al-Murr said that they rely on people on the outskirts of Umm Jalal and visits to the targeted areas to verify and document the extent of the shelling. Al-Murr stated that the council follows up on the movements of the forcibly displaced people (FDP) from Umm Jalal and tries to get relief organizations to help them.

The local council said that more than 175 missile and artillery shells hit the village despite the Russian-Turkish demilitarization agreement. The council called on all organizations to help the FDP, especially at the advent of winter.

The village of Umm Jalal is included in the demilitarized zone agreement reached by the Russian and Turkish presidents in mid-September 2018. Russia pledged that the Syrian government forces will not shell the area, but they still target it on a daily basis.
