Deir al-Zor - SMART

The Kurdish Autonomous Administration’s Asayish forces terrorize schoolchildren in the village of Abu Hamam near the city of  Hajin, 112 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

The Asayish Forces (or Internal Security Forces) were formed in 2012 by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Syria. The Asayish Forces include more than 10 thousand members operating in the areas controlled by the Autonomous Administration in Northern and Northeastern Syria.

On Sunday, local sources told SMART that the Asayish forces from the headquarters in the village shot at the wall of the agricultural school in the Akhawi neighborhood, causing panic among the students.

The sources added that the the Asayish members verbally harassed the school teachers, warning against potential clashes between the members of a nearby Asayish checkpoint and the al-Shu'aitat tribe.

The sources noted that the teachers and the educational administration complained to the civil council of Deir al-Zor, without any response from the latter.

SMART has tried to reach the military council of Deir al-Zor for comments.

On January 2, 2018, the Syrian Democratic Forces gained control of the town of Abu Hammam, after clashes with the Islamic State in the Island Storm campaign.
