Homs - SMART

On Monday, the Civil Affairs Office in the al-Rukban camp near the Syrian-Jordanian border (240 kilometers southeast of Homs) announced that a new aid convoy would enter the camp next month.

The head of the Civil Affairs Office in the camp, Abdullah al-Oqba, reported that the United Nations office in Damascus promised to enter the convoy on Dec. 15, without an official announcement or details about the aid.

The head of the local council of the camp, Derbas al-Khalidi, reported that they received promises from the UN about the arrival of the convoy. Al-Khalidi stated that the forcibly displaced people in the camp reject any attempt to close the camp.

Earlier, an international delegation accompanied by a Syrian Red Crescent team entered the camp with a humanitarian aid convoy. More than a month ago, the Syrian government laid siege to the al-Rukban camp, preventing residents access to food and medical supplies.

Last month, 175 children suffered from malnutrition in the camp. Many children died as a result of a lack of medicine and medical care. Dozens also suffered from difficulty in breathing as a result of a sandstorm.

The camp is home to about 50,000 people, who suffer from poor livelihood, health and education, amid protests against the failure of humanitarian organizations to provide aid.
